RE VIEWS: RDA ACT's CEO Mike Claessens shares his RE Day experience DEC

Welcome to RE:VIEWS, a new platform for news or views shared across the SERREE network.

Author: Mike Claessens - CEO, Regional Development Australia ACT

Well Saturday 1 December, the first day of Summer, dawned bright and beautiful - a perfect backdrop for Renewable Energy Community Day.

Minister Rattenbury officially opened the event at the solar farm, and joined us for a tour of the site. We thank the Minister for sharing his vision for energy and emissions management in the ACT including answering many interesting questions from the crowd.

An intrepid crew of experts, renewable energy enthusiasts, RDA ACT and a family or two then jumped on the bus and headed off to see wind turbines and recycling in action across the region.

As many of you might already know, Veolia maintains an aquaculture operation on its recycling site at Woodlawn north of Canberra.

Many of these superb eating fish find their way to dinner tables in Canberra via Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets.

The company is also trialling food production warmed with recovered heat from their biogas-to-energy generators.

It is also now geared up for providing high quality compost sorted from Sydney's kerbside rubbish with their new multi-million dollar Mechanical Biological Treatment facility - which once given the greenlight will boost plant growth.

The take-home message is that the renewable energy sector produces unexpected multipliers - and one of the most important of these is making food production cheaper - be it fish or fresh vegetables - and doing it nearby with less food miles.

RDA ACT is looking to build on SERREE's experience to support businesses and investment opportunities looking to apply renewable energy technologies across different sectors, such as water and agriculture.
