Aurora Solar Energy Project

The Aurora Solar Energy Project brings the most advanced solar power generation technology to South Australia, supporting its energy security and carbon reduction objectives. It also represents a significant opportunity for South Australian workers and businesses to participate in this exciting project.

Aurora is a 150 megawatt solar thermal power project incorporating 8 hours of energy storage (1,100 megawatt-hours of storage). Aurora will deliver over 500 gigawatt-hours of energy annually, providing fully dispatchable electricity to the network when its needed most. Storage will enable the solar thermal station to operate just like a conventional coal or gas power station, reliably generating electricity day and night except without any emissions.

SolarReserve anticipates that a large portion of the equipment and services for the project will be sourced from South Australia in the construction phase, which will support an entirely new industry for South Australia. The supply chain which will be developed in the state for Aurora will be leveraged for other solar thermal power station projects in South Australia and the broader region. The project is expected to create 650 full-time construction jobs for a duration of 30 months.


The project is to be located about 30kms north of Port Augusta, adjacent to the Stuart Highway.


Construction of the Aurora Solar Energy Project is anticipated to take 30 months, with construction starting in 2018. SolarReserve has not yet appointed a project Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor. Once assigned, supplier contracts will be with the EPC directly.

Information on specific supply opportunities will be communicated on the ICN Gateway project page as it becomes available, with local industry able to register its interest against them.
